OIT Redesign (2006)
The previous OIT website. The menu along the right side was hard to digest.
In the new design, we took an approach that was so simple, yet very effective - we thought about the interface and navigation from the perspective of someone on campus looking for help for the first time.
While our group's primary objective was to assist professors and students to learn and grow with technology, it was secondary to many of our site's visitors who were simply looking for help. Our new design respected that.
High on our priority list was creating a useful navigation system. We reduced the number of top level menu items from twenty down to five. Then we prioritized three of them for our users looking for help.
By chunking and using other visual devices to organize the items, we helped make things much easier to digest. Best of all, we maintained valid, semantic, easily readable and updatable code.
